President Barack Obama (oops, Freudian slip!) was officially nominated today as the first African-American nominee to a major party. Hillary Clinton led on the convention floor to declare that Obama was the nominee of the party to defeat John McCain and the Republicans in November. It’s something that could only happen in the Democratic Party: a woman and an African American come this close to becoming president.

“With eyes firmly fixed on the future, in the spirit of unity, with the goal of victory, with faith in our party and our country, let’s declare together in one voice, right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president,” Hillary Clinton said, setting off a loud celebration in Denver as Obama’s nomination became official.

Following up on his wife’s stellar performance last night, President Bill Clinton declared in his speech tonight that, “Barack Obama is ready to lead America and restore American leadership in the world.” President Clinton went on: “They actually want us to reward them for the last eight years by giving them four more. Let’s send them a message that will echo from the Rockies all across America: Thanks, but no thanks. In this case, the third time is not the charm. America can do better than that. And Barack Obama will do better than that.”

This party is united, it’s excited and it’s ready to put an end to the rule of George W. Bush!

Hillary Clinton delivered perhaps her best speech of her political career tonight. I’m an Obama supporter and while I was disgusted by the tactics that the Clintons used against him in the primaries, Hillary gave a rousing speech tonight and deserves much credit for the effort she put forth. As the first woman to have come this far in a political campaign for president, 18 million votes ain’t bad, wouldn’t you say?

That being said, everything Hillary stands for and everything her supporters believe in is at stake in this election. Hillary and Barack have virtually identical positions on the issues, whereas John McCain is the opposite on almost everything. Any SANE Hillary supporter, as much as they may be disappointed that she did not prevail, can not let a George Bush Republican win the White House again. It is against everything that Hillary has fought for her entire life! To vote for McCain would be to turn your back on Hillary.

Always the party poopers, a good deal of Republicans from across the country have converged on Denver for the Democratic National Convention. One of them, a supposed former Hillary Clinton supporter, invoked on Hardball with Chris Matthews that Barack Obama was a Muslim who went to a madrassa. Even though CNN and other news organizations debunked this claim (he attended a secular school), it continues to get circulated on the Internet and in the media (especially on channels like Fox). When pressed for evidence, she had none. Apparently rumors and innuendo are enough for some people’s small, bigoted minds.

The Nashville Post is reporting that Barack Obama’s campaign is converging on the city of Indianapolis, Indiana for an event on Saturday. The paper reports that Indiana Senator Evan Bayh will be named Barack Obama’s vice-presidential running mate and that the two will hold a “major event” together in the Hoosier State. Apparently staff preparing for the Democratic Convention next week in Denver are being pulled from the city and sent to Indiana for the announcement.

The Obama campaign has said all along that the first to know will be his supporters by text message and e-mail. If they were to announce Bayh either today (Thursday) or Friday then that would still give them time to hold a formal rally to celebrate the selection on Saturday. An event is also expected to take place in Springfield, Illinois on Saturday and the Obama campaign has sent e-mails to its supporters for them to RSVP tickets. The ride from Springfield to Indianapolis is a relatively short one – about four hours by car and 30 minutes by plane.

ROCK HILL, South Carolina (Reuters) – Sen. Hillary Clinton, in an about-face, said on Friday she wants the Democratic Party delegates in two states that were barred by the national party to be reinstated and counted in the race to determine the party’s U.S. presidential nominee. In those states, Michigan and Florida, Clinton could stake claim to nearly all the delegates to the nominating convention in question — more than 350. She was the only candidate on the Democratic ballot in Michigan and holds a strong lead in Florida, which holds its contest on Tuesday.

The national party eliminated the delegates from Michigan and Florida because the states broke party rules by holding primary voting contests before February 5. But just four days before Florida’s primary, Clinton said she wants the delegates reinstated. “I know other campaigns have tried to downplay the significance of these two states,” Clinton told reporters. “I think that is not a good strategy for Democrats or any of us who cares about the outcome of this election.”

To become the Democratic nominee in the November election, a candidate must collect a majority of more than 2,000 delegates by competing in state contests around the nation. Because Michigan and Florida violated the rules, all the major Democratic candidates pledged not to campaign there before their primaries. Clinton said she did not think she was violating that agreement.

“I think it’s important we send a message to the people of Michigan and Florida that Democrats care about their lives and their futures, and I will certainly do everything I can to be a good president for them,” she said. In Michigan, Clinton won the primary after the other major candidates pulled their names from the ballot. Polls show she holds a strong lead in Florida, where all the candidates are on the ballot.

A spokesman for her chief rival, Sen. Barack Obama, accused Clinton of changing course. “Senator Clinton’s own campaign has repeatedly said that this is a contest for delegates, and Florida is a contest that offers zero,” campaign manager David Plouffe said in a statement. “Whether it is Barack Obama’s record, her position on Social Security, or even the meaning of the Florida primary, it seems like Hillary Clinton will do or say anything to win an election,” he said.

——————————————————————–

Saw this one coming. Hillary didn’t care about Michigan or Florida… until she needed their delegates to win the Democratic nomination. Now that she ran uncontested in Michigan (and won only 55% of the vote), she wants those delegates. Obama and Edwards weren’t even on the ballot! This is yet another sign of how desperate the Clinton campaign is. They must be scared as hell of what is going to happen on February 5 if they are counting on states with 0 delegates to win. It’s obvious they don’t want to play by the rules.
