Every four years America elects a new president. Those who fail are (at least sometimes) voted out of office and those who succeed win a second term. No one is perfect (just ask Bill or Ronald), each president has his fair share of controversies. From Watergate to Iran/Contra to Monica.
The idea shouldn’t be much different for a baseball commissioner. The current “president” of baseball, Bud Selig, has been the leader of the league since 1992. What has happened under his watch for the past 16 seasons falls on him. Certainly not everything that happens is within the control of the commissioner. The 1994 strike is an example of this. His calling of the 2003 All-Star game a tie was not one of his brighter moments.
But there are times when enough is enough. I’m sure I am not the only baseball fan who has had enough of the MLB’s tolerance towards juicers. The fact that Barry “Steroid” Bonds was allowed to beat Hank Aaron’s record was bad enough. Then we hear names drip out… big names. Rafael Palmeiro (who lied to Congress), Roger Clemens, and Jason Giambi. Over the weekend word leaks that A-Rod was also using steroids. Someone needs to lose their job and I think it should start at the top.
