Obama claims historic presidential nomination

Posted on: August 27th, 2008 by Kyle. | No Comments

President Barack Obama (oops, Freudian slip!) was officially nominated today as the first African-American nominee to a major party. Hillary Clinton led on the convention floor to declare that Obama was the nominee of the party to defeat John McCain and the Republicans in November. It’s something that could only happen in the Democratic Party: a woman and an African American come this close to becoming president.

“With eyes firmly fixed on the future, in the spirit of unity, with the goal of victory, with faith in our party and our country, let’s declare together in one voice, right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president,” Hillary Clinton said, setting off a loud celebration in Denver as Obama’s nomination became official.

Following up on his wife’s stellar performance last night, President Bill Clinton declared in his speech tonight that, “Barack Obama is ready to lead America and restore American leadership in the world.” President Clinton went on: “They actually want us to reward them for the last eight years by giving them four more. Let’s send them a message that will echo from the Rockies all across America: Thanks, but no thanks. In this case, the third time is not the charm. America can do better than that. And Barack Obama will do better than that.”

This party is united, it’s excited and it’s ready to put an end to the rule of George W. Bush!

You go girl!

Hillary Clinton delivered perhaps her best speech of her political career tonight. I’m an Obama supporter and while I was disgusted by the tactics that the Clintons used against him in the primaries, Hillary gave a rousing speech tonight and deserves much credit for the effort she put forth. As the first woman to have come this far in a political campaign for president, 18 million votes ain’t bad, wouldn’t you say?

That being said, everything Hillary stands for and everything her supporters believe in is at stake in this election. Hillary and Barack have virtually identical positions on the issues, whereas John McCain is the opposite on almost everything. Any SANE Hillary supporter, as much as they may be disappointed that she did not prevail, can not let a George Bush Republican win the White House again. It is against everything that Hillary has fought for her entire life! To vote for McCain would be to turn your back on Hillary.

Republican Smear Campaign on Obama Continues

Posted on: August 26th, 2008 by Kyle. | No Comments

Always the party poopers, a good deal of Republicans from across the country have converged on Denver for the Democratic National Convention. One of them, a supposed former Hillary Clinton supporter, invoked on Hardball with Chris Matthews that Barack Obama was a Muslim who went to a madrassa. Even though CNN and other news organizations debunked this claim (he attended a secular school), it continues to get circulated on the Internet and in the media (especially on channels like Fox). When pressed for evidence, she had none. Apparently rumors and innuendo are enough for some people’s small, bigoted minds.

Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama Deliver on a Remarkable Night

The first day of the Democratic National Convention took place today with a number of different speakers taking the podium. The two most prominent speakers were Senator Ted Kennedy, the lion of the Senate, and Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle Obama.

With the knowledge that Ted Kennedy has been diagnosed with brain cancer, it is likely that this will be his last convention. He made it a point in his speech that he would see to it that he will be in the Senate in January to pass universal health care legislation with Barack Obama as president. Tonight, Ted rhetorically passed on the torch to the next generation. This was Ted Kennedy at his finest.

Michelle Obama had an equally moving speech. Her job was to dispel the many nasty rumors that have been spread about her and her husband. Not only did she show that the Obamas are a far more normal American family than the McCains, having been raised in a middle class family and earning their way through school, she showed her love of both her family and of her country.

At the end of the night the audience was emotionally spent. I’ll be the first to admit that I shed a tear hearing Ted Kennedy speak, knowing it may be the last time we see him again. The Kennedys have perhaps sacrificed more than any other family. Ted has lost three brothers in his lifetime – one to the Nazis and two to political assassination. Now he finds himself in a battle for his life. We are with you Ted.

This is more than about individual people, though. This election is about the idea of a better tomorrow. It is about conquering fear with the hope that our country can be a better place if we actually try. Settling for more of the same is not going to cut it. These times require more from us. The torch has been passed. Let’s not pass it backwards.

Republican Senator Lugar Congratulates Biden

Posted on: August 23rd, 2008 by Kyle. | No Comments

The ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Republican Senator Dick Lugar of Indiana, today congratulated Joe Biden on being selected as Barack Obama’s running mate. Biden is the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, a committee that Lugar chaired when Republicans controlled the Congress. Lugar had previously worked with Barack Obama on the issue of loose nuclear material in the former Soviet Union. Below is what Senator Lugar said in a statement to CNN:

Sen. Dick Lugar of Indiana put out a statement Saturday saying, “I congratulate Senator Barack Obama on his selection of my friend, Senator Joe Biden, to be his vice-presidential running mate. I have enjoyed for many years the opportunity to work with Joe Biden to bring strong bipartisan support to United States foreign policy.”

Lugar made the statement as he was enroute to Tbilisi, the capital of the Republic of Georgia.

Lugar also commented on his fellow senator from Indiana, Democrat Evan Bayh, who was also considered to be on the shortlist of Obama’s potential running mates.

“I share the disappointment of many Hoosiers that my partner in the Senate, Evan Bayh, was not selected on this occasion, but I believe he will continue to have widespread support for higher office during many years ahead.”

Is it possible that Indiana’s senior senator, a Republican, may support the Obama/Biden ticket? Seems like it.

Obama Opens 10 More Offices in Indiana

Posted on: August 22nd, 2008 by Kyle. | No Comments

The Obama VP pick is expected within the next 12 hours. Yet the Obama campaign just sent out an e-mail to their supporters from Indiana that tomorrow the campaign is celebrating the opening of 10 more campaign offices in the state. This is on top of the 16 other offices that had previously opened in the largest Indiana cities (Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, Gary, Evansville, etc.). Below is part of the e-mail from the Obama campaign:

This weekend, join the Indiana Campaign for Change at one of our 10 local office openings across the state.

It’s a great opportunity to meet staff and Hoosier Team members in your area before we kick off a Week of Action to reach out to undecided voters and bring new voices into the political process.
Find a local office opening in your area and help build this movement for change.

Local offices are community meeting places for supporters and Hoosier Teams — groups of neighborhood leaders committed to bringing change to Indiana.

Indiana is crucial to the Campaign for Change’s election strategy, and Hoosiers are ready for change.

With less than 75 days until November 4th, we can’t afford to sit on the sidelines.

Don’t take my word for it… McCain said it himself:

McCain Doesn’t Know How Many Homes He Owns

Posted on: August 21st, 2008 by Kyle. | No Comments

Call it old age or just being coy, the “Straight Talk Express” crashed head on with reality today as the number of homes John McCain owns became an issue when he claimed to a reporter that he didn’t know.

Days after he cracked that being rich in the U.S. meant earning at least $5 million a year, Republican presidential candidate John McCain acknowledged that he wasn’t sure how many houses he and his wealthy wife actually own.

“I think — I’ll have my staff get to you,” McCain responded to a question posed by Politico, according to a story Thursday on the publication’s Web site. “It’s condominiums where — I’ll have them get to you.”

Later, the McCain campaign told Politico that McCain and his wife, Cindy, have at least four in three states — Arizona, California and Virginia. Newsweek recently estimated the two owned at least seven properties.

Obama Campaign Converges on Indiana; Bayh to be named VP?

Posted on: August 21st, 2008 by Kyle. | No Comments

The Nashville Post is reporting that Barack Obama’s campaign is converging on the city of Indianapolis, Indiana for an event on Saturday. The paper reports that Indiana Senator Evan Bayh will be named Barack Obama’s vice-presidential running mate and that the two will hold a “major event” together in the Hoosier State. Apparently staff preparing for the Democratic Convention next week in Denver are being pulled from the city and sent to Indiana for the announcement.

The Obama campaign has said all along that the first to know will be his supporters by text message and e-mail. If they were to announce Bayh either today (Thursday) or Friday then that would still give them time to hold a formal rally to celebrate the selection on Saturday. An event is also expected to take place in Springfield, Illinois on Saturday and the Obama campaign has sent e-mails to its supporters for them to RSVP tickets. The ride from Springfield to Indianapolis is a relatively short one – about four hours by car and 30 minutes by plane.
